JASPER JOHNS (B. 1930) The Critic Smiles lithograph with hand-coloring in metallic paint, on Chatham paper, 1966, signed, titled and dated in black crayon, numbered 28/40 (there were also two artist's proofs), published by Universal Limited Art Editions, West Islip, New York, with their blindstamp, with full margins Image: 13 3 ⁄ 4 x 11 in. (349 x 279 mm.) Sheet: 25 1 ⁄ 4 x 20 in. (640 x 508 mm.)

In July last year Christies in New York held the auction Contemporary Edition, which included the work The Critic Smiles by Jasper Johns. The »bidding war« ended at USD 4,410.00 (€ 4,322.68), 47% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Jasper Johns achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Small False Start in November last year with an auction result of USD 55,350,000.00 (€ 53,618,134.26).
Oberer Schätzpreis um 47 % übertroffen
Im Juli letzten Jahres führte Christies in New York die Auktion Contemporary Edition durch, in der auch die Arbeit The Critic Smiles von Jasper Johns zur Versteigerung kam. Das »Bietergefecht« endete beim Preis von USD 4.410,00 (€ 4.322,68) und damit 47% über dem oberen Schätzpreis. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Jasper Johns erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Small False Start im November letzten Jahres mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 55.350.000,00 (€ 53.618.134,26).
