Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
When the work Polar Bears by John Wesley was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in December 2019, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - USD 3,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at USD 10,000.00 (€ 8,907.10). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by John Wesley achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Plague in May 2008 with an auction result of USD 577,000.00 (€ 370,822.62).
